What is Flood Zone X?

Every property in the U.S. falls within a flood zone, either high-risk or low-risk.  Flood Zone X is one of the most common zones outside coastal areas,  and it’s generally favorable because it represents areas of minimal flood risk.

Some property owners even jokingly say they’re “not in a flood zone” if their home is in Flood Zone X, because the risk is relatively low compared to zones like A, AE, or V.

Here’s what you need to know about Flood Zone X:

  • It is classified by FEMA as low-risk, meaning the chance of flooding is minimal.

  • Flood insurance is usually optional, although coverage is still recommended.

  • Properties in Flood Zone X often have lower flood insurance premiums than higher-risk zones.

  • Being in this zone does not mean there is no risk — heavy storms or unusual events can still cause flooding.

Understanding your flood zone helps you make informed decisions about property insurance and risk management. At The Flood Insurance Guru, we help homeowners across the country understand their flood zones, compare insurance options, and ensure their properties are protected.
