The End of the 2019 Hurricane season

In this episode of The Flood Insurance Guru Podcast we are discussing the 2019 Hurricane season.

Hurricane season runs from June 1-November 30th. Thats not to say that hurricanes don't occur before or after, this is just the peak times because of the warm tropical waters.

So what happened in the 2019 hurricane season. Well according to NOAA there were 18 named storms in 2019.  6 hurricanes which 3 became major storms. Remember a major hurricane is considered to be a category 3,4, or 5. 

2019 showed us how times are changing and we really have to be prepared when it comes to hurricanes. Hurricane Dorian became one the strongest hurricanes in Atlantic basin history. It destroyed many parts of the Bahamas.

Hurricane Dorian also caused widespread flooding throughout the coastal parts of North Carolina.

Storms like this are only going to continue to get stronger as we see a lot of climate change taking place. We aren't just seeing this in hurricanes but in snowfall amounts in the north, and rain fall amounts across the country.

The importance of having flood insurance and a disaster emergency fund have never been more crucial. What many people do not realize is that many flood insurance policies are on a reimbursed basis. It could take you up to 6 months to get your money back if it's a major disaster. 

When dealing with hurricane season it's also important to understand you generally can't buy a flood insurance policy the day before the hurricane hits. The National Flood Insurance Program has a standard 30 day wait period and most private flood insurance companies have a 5 to 15 day wait period.
