Let's take a short drive into understanding how flood damages to your car, or any type of vehicle for that matter, are covered by your flood insurance.

Picture this, you're driving your vehicle on a day with severe weather and you start to either experience flooding or you had to go through some flood to get to where you're trying to go. You can also put this in a scenario where your vehicle is parked and suddenly it gets flooded. Now, this is a common thing that people do since there's insurance coverage for the vehicle, right?

Well, to set things straight, it's actually untrue that flood policy covers this type of damages to your vehicle. In fact, both flood damage and water damage to your car due to flood accidents aren't really covered by your flood insurance policy.

Insurance companies have different policy jackets and policy exclusions in the insurance you're getting from them. For auto insurance policies, any type of flood damage is actually covered through what's called comprehensive car coverage. This coverage is generally added to the standard auto insurance and is a different policy coverage with collision coverage. Comprehensive coverage includes damages from fire, natural disasters including flooding incidents, theft, falling objects, and many more

Now, it's important to note that if you don't have comprehensive coverage with your car, then you won't actually get any coverage for flooding. On the other hand, just like any insurance company, your coverage will actually be denied if they found out that the resulting losses can be prevented. So, if you decide to drive into standing water or flood water despite having the flood warnings at the time and the road being closed, your auto insurance policy and the auto insurance company themselves won't provide comprehensive coverage from this event.

Keep in mind that comprehensive coverage in your auto insurance coverage is going to be the policy that's going to provide your all of the necessary cost of repair for your car if it gets flooded, but flood insurance doesn't cover any of vehicular losses due to flooding.

Regardless if it's going to come from the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) or private flood insurance, it's important to remember that policies for flood insurance cover flood damage to property and contents or personal property within it. Flood coverage differs from each provider for property damage.
